Discover Angling - Youth Fishing Trip

Discover Angling (DA) a 501 (c)3 corporation that takes disadvantaged kids fishing, took a group of Autistic kids from Homestead High School in Cupertino, CA fishing on the ocean on the Huli Cat out of Princeton Harbor in Half Moon Bay on April 23, 2019. There were 18 kids and 4 counselors/teachers along with the 9 mentors provided by Discover Angling. The water was a little bumpy but the kids were real troopers.  The fishing for rockfish and bottom fish was good and all the kids went home with a bag of fillets and/or a whole fish. Lunch was served by Discover Angling along with water and chips.  Before the trip began one of the mentors, Dan Wolford, from Coastside Fishing Club, a fish expert, gave the kids a presentation on fish and the environment.

The trip was supported by Friends of Rollo/Rollo’s Kids and the generous fare from the Huli Cat owner Tom Mattusch. The Captain on the trip was Mike Cabanas and the Deckhand was Mike Juanes.  The kids enjoyed the two Mikes.  Capt Mike got them on the fish, and both Mikes worked unhooking caught fish and getting the lines untangled or off the bottom when they got stuck.  The mentors worked with kids helping them fish and giving them an understanding what fishing on the ocean is all about.

Tom Mattusch, owner of the Huli Cat is kind enough to host many of our kids trips which we have been doing since 2011.
