Commissioner Bernardo was elected as Vice President of the Harbor Board of Commissioners at the Board Meeting of January 17, 2018.
Commissioner Robert Bernardo was elected to the San Mateo County Harbor Commission in November 2010. Bernardo ran for re-election to the Harbor Board in 2014, winning the four year seat on the Board. He was re-elected to the position of Secretary for the Commission on January 18, 2017. Bernardo will be up for re-election in 2018.
Currently, Bernardo is a manager at the Port of Oakland, the fifth largest seaport in the country. Prior to the Port, he worked as an investigator at the San Francisco Office of the District Attorney and previously, he worked in the crime prevention unit of the San Francisco Police Department. Bernardo has served on both the South San Francisco Planning Commission and Personnel Board.
He has lived in San Mateo County for over 35 years, and his community work spans decades. Bernardo is an active member of the Sierra Club, South San Francisco Friends of the Library, Filipino-American Coalition, and Henrik Ibsen Lodge (Sons of Norway). He has also served on the board of two Bay Area chambers of commerce, The San Mateo County Water Transit Advocates and other non-profit organizations. In 2006, the Business Times named Bernardo a "Top 40 Business Leader Under Forty," and he was also named Grand Marshal of the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade.
Bernardo speaks Tagalog and French. He volunteers at his local synagogue, and he enjoys traveling. Bernardo obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English at the University of California, Davis in 1991.
